William Melahn, MD, FAAFP
Site Director
Dr. Melahn has worked for St. Claire since 1997 when he came as a National Health Service Corps scholar. He graduated in 1994 from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Family Medicine at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1997. In 2004 he was a winner of the AAFP Foundation/Pfizer Teacher Development Awards. His professional interests include family-centered maternity care, child, adolescent and college healthcare, medical informatics and evidence-based medicine, and doctor-patient communication. In addition to being Site Director of the residency program, he is Vice President of Medical Affairs at St. Claire Regional and Medical Director of Student Health at Morehead State University.
Dr. Melahn lives in Morehead with his wife and three children, Molly, Peter, and Mary Catherine. He enjoys traveling, hiking, and cooking BBQ as well as hanging out at the Fuzzy Duck café in Morehead with his wife and kids.

Denis Aliker, MD
Dr. Aliker was born in Gulu Northern Uganda. He lived and attended school both in Kenya and Uganda. He continued his education at Berea College where he obtained his undergraduate studies. Dr. Aliker graduated from University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 2005. He rotated at St. Claire Regional as a senior medical student and has a strong interest in the medically underserved and in international medical missions. His interest includes outdoor sports, especially soccer. Dr. Aliker graduated from St. Claire Regional Family Medicine Residency Program in 2008.
Craig Burrows, MD, FAAFP
Dr. Burrows is the medical director of the St. Claire Regional Family Medicine Clinic in Morehead, which is a primary care clinic. He graduated from medical school at SUNY Buffalo and completed his residency in Family Medicine at Saint Vincent’s in Erie, Pennsylvania. Dr. Burrows has extensive experience precepting residents and medical students. During residency he won the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Resident Teaching Award. He has undertaken several medical missions to Africa and South America. His interests include the spiritual aspects of medicine, Family-centered maternity care, inpatient care, practice management, and geriatrics. He also follows many patients at our local nursing homes.
Craig lives in Rowan County with his wife Brenda and their four very energetic children. He enjoys running and working as a member of his church.
Michelle Carpenter, DO
Dr. Carpenter is the medical director of St. Claire Regional Family Medicine clinic in Owingsville. She is a graduate of Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency training at Fort Wayne Medical Education Program-Family Practice in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dr. Carpenter began working at SCR in August 2007.
Dr. Carpenter, her husband John and daughter Mia reside in Morehead. She enjoys church activites, travel, sports and volunteer work.
Amy Conley-Sallaz, MD
Associate Site Director
Dr. Conley is the Medical Director of the Elliott County Medical Clinic, one of our model rural family health centers. She also serves as Assistant Residency Site Director. She is a native of Eastern Kentucky and graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed her residency in Family Medicine. She completed her residency in family medicine at East Kentucky Family Medicine in Hazard.
Her interests include family-centered maternity care, women’s health including colposcopy and LEEP and office procedures. Dr. Conley-Sallaz is a winner of the 2007 AAFP Pfizer Teacher Development Award. She and her husband Rob live in Rowan County. Dr. Conley-Sallaz enjoys living in the country and raising her two stepchildren and two year old twin girls. She also enjoys being involved in her church, school and community.
Lisa Goldstein, MD
Dr. Goldstein practices at the St. Claire Family Medicine in Sandy Hook, Kentucky. She is a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX. Dr. Goldstein began working at St. Claire in September 2007.
Dr. Goldstein resides in Morehead and enjoys music, gardening and her animals. Her interests include obstetrics, integrative medicine, and residency and undergraduate medical education curriculum and program development.
Mary Jane Humkey, MD
Dr. Humkey is originally from Illinois. She graduated
from Northwestern University Medical School and completed her residency in Family Practice at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Dr. Humkey joined the staff at St. Claire Regional in 1985, as a part of the Family Medicine Clinics and has watched the Family Medicine Department grow over the past 23 years. She has served as Medical Director for Famioy Medicine since 1995 and rotates to all of the clinics to serve patients.
Dr. Humkey’s professional interests are child sexual abuse and providing medical evaluations for child victims from a multiple-county area.
Sylvia Kerr, CNM
Sylvia Kerr has been a certified nurse-midwife with St. Claire since October 1988. She received her nursing education at Our Lady of the Lake Nursing School in Batin Rouge, LA graduating December 1974. Her midwifery education was completed at University of Mississippi Nursing-Midwifery Education Program in Jackson, MS. She has attended births in multiple settings – including hospital and birth centers. Sylvia is an advocate of family-centered maternity care and feels that her philosophy meshes extremely well with family physicians. Lactation counseling is a strong area of interest and she received lactation counselor certification in February 1998.
Sylvia has three children and four grandchildren.
Carolyn Moore, MD
Dr. Moore graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and completed her residency in Family Medicine at Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She worked in Appalachian Virginia prior to coming here to Saint Claire. Her interests include Family-centered maternity care, women’s health, colposcopy and LEEP procedures while coordinating our home visit curriculum. She is the medical director of Emergency Medical Services in Carter County.
Her personal interests include horseback riding and gardening on her farm in Fleming County.
Rachel L. Short, MD
Dr. Short is a graduate of University of Kentucky College of Medicine and UK’s Family Practice residency. She is originally from Olive Hill, KY, and now makes Menifee County her home. They have 3 cats, (Jack, William & Steven), 1 dog (Roscoe), 1 fish and 20 pet mice. Dr. Short enjoys women’s and children’s health issues. On her days off, she enjoys hiking, rock climbing, reading, and painting.
Maria Sy , MD
Dr. Sy is the Medical Director of St. Claire Family Medicine in Olive Hill. She graduated from the University of the East Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, Manila, Philippines. She completed her residency at Ghent Family Practice, Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Sy joined St. Claire in November 1997.
Dr. Sy and her husband Greg reside in Morehead. Her hobbies include sports, music, outdoor activities and cooking.
